Speaker Series

The Franklin Expedition

Presented by Bill Noon

In September 2014, SNSYC member Bill Noon, as Captain of the Coast Guard icebreaker Sir Wilfrid Laurier, played a key role in the discovery of HMS Erebus.

Erebus was one of two ships from Sir John Franklin's ill-fated quest to find the Northwest Passage that began in 1845 and ended when his vessels became stuck in ice.

Captain Noon will talk about how the discovery unfolded and will share with us photographs of the search process and the materials that were discovered from both HMS Erebus and HMS Terror under the waters off King William Island in the Arctic.

BUFFET at 1800 - $25 (T and G included);

TALK at 1915 Reservations at 250 656 4600 please!

This will be popular - so reserve early!

Each Speakers' Series event is preceded by a special buffet prepared by our Chef and his staff and is served at 18:00.

The dishes Chef prepares are often inspired by the topic of the talk. In the past we’ve dined in style on French, Mexican, Russian, British, and Thai cuisines, just to mention a few.

Contact the staff at the club to book seats for the Buffet.

Starting at 19:15, we are treated to an illustrated talk by SNSYC members or presenters from the wider community.

The presentations deal with such things as sailing exploits, travelling on foot and by bicycle in foreign lands, cruising on ships and canal boats, environmental issues and much more.
