Sunday Walking Program

Most Sundays, year-round, we organize walks in the Greater Victoria area.  The walks start at 1400hrs for most of the year except for when it gets warmer in the summer when we start at 1000hrs.  The walks last between 1.25 and 2 hours and are graded as to difficulty so that you can decide if the walk is suitable to you (a one booter is dead easy, a four booter is the most difficult we attempt).

Friends, relatives and dogs are more than welcome to accompany members on these walks.

Most of the routes are located in Saanich and in the northern part of the Peninsula but, occasionally, we venture further afield into Oak Bay, Victoria, Langford or Metchosin. And, of course, if we’re close to the clubhouse many walkers turn up there after the walk!  Check out the maps and guides of some of the hikes that are listed below.

We have been running these walks for over ten years now and they’ve proved to be very popular. Not only do members get a bit of exercise but it is a great way to stay in touch with the club during the off-season for boating. Also, it is an opportunity to get to know other members and to explore parts of the Greater Victoria area with which you may not be familiar.

Although the Sunday walks will show up on the Event Calendar, we communicate the details by email a few days before the scheduled walk.

If you wish to be included on the email list, go to your “Profile Page”, scroll down to “Club Interests” and put a check mark in the “Walking” selection. (Don’t forget to save your changes)

If you think that you might want to join one of the walks, or want to find out a bit more about them, please contact the Volunteer Coordinator

So, join the walking group for a chance to keep up with old friends, make new ones and get some exercise in the bargain!

Maps and Guides

The following maps and guides are, of course, only a fraction of the routes we’ve been on over the years and they are, for the most part, really easy.  Here are some things to bear in mind:

  1. All of the walks are graded as to difficulty.  A ‘one booter’ is mostly flat and follows quiet roads and groomed trails for the most part.  There may be one or two ‘uppy’ or ‘downy’ bits but they won’t present any difficulty if you take your time.  A ‘two booter’ is a bit more challenging and involves more hill and trails that may not be groomed.  A ‘three booter’ is the most difficult and is quite challenging in terms of length, elevation gain and loss, and trail quality.
  2. The walks last between an hour and two hours.
  3. Always carry water with you in warm weather and, if you have one, a cell phone in case of an emergency.  And, please wear hiking shoes or boots!
  4. We’ve provided four location maps for the walks.  There are 11 walks that are in the northern part of the Peninsula, 4 in Central Saanich, another 4 in Saanich (all starting off Wilkinson Road), and 5 in SE Saanich and Oak Bay.
If you have any suggestions or questions, please contact Adrian Kershaw at volunteer@snsyc.ca .
