SNSYC has an active, year-round racing program that offers both distance and round-the-buoys racing. In the winter we race on Sundays and in warmer months we race on Wednesday evenings as well as some Sundays. In addition, we also organize the overnight Patos Island Race in the Spring, the Challenging Racing and Social Happenings (CRASH) Regatta in late Summer and participate in similar races and regattas organized by other clubs as part of the Vancouver Island Racing Series (VIRS).
If you're not yet involved in racing but would like to try it out we can help. First timer skippers get to race their boats free for one race series (6 races), and don't have to be a member of the club! Thereafter, it's a very modest $60 per boat per calendar year for members (non- members $85) which covers over 50 races. And of course with each boat needing crew we're always looking for able and willing crew members. No fees to be crew. We will mentor new racers and help you in any way that we can to enjoy the racing to its fullest. While racing you get to learn the local waters, tides and wind conditions in a safe environment - it's a great way to meet other sailors in a relaxed and supportive environment. We consider our gatherings in the club bar after each race to be almost as important as the race.
If you want to learn to race but you're not confident enough yet to use your own boat or don't own one, there's always the option of crewing on someone else's boat. This will build your confidence and let you meet new people. And SNSYC also offers adult sailing classes on our Martin 242 if you want to brush up your skills!
Finally, if as a skipper you don't have a full crew for a race, we have a bank of people who want to race - most of them experienced. Or if you're keen to offer yourself as a crew member we can usually find you a spot on a boat. Join our Facebook group here or come to the club two hours prior to scheduled start time where we try and match skippers with crew.
